Blastocystis homins is a type of microscopic organisms being ingested by humans in contaminated food and appears in stool. It can also be found in healthy people.

Causes

Blastocystis homins is single celled parasite that normally habitat in the gastrointestinal tract mostly without any symptoms. Sometimes it can invade the tract and cause gastrointestinal/digestive symptoms.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of patient. Other tests and investigations include the following:

  • Stool examination
  • Blood tests
  • Endoscopy
Treatment

Treatment is done by:

  • If organisms is present without any symptoms no treatment is required and it’s usually self-limiting.
  • However if the condition is producing symptoms some medications can be prescribed like Antibiotics, such as metronidazole (Flagyl) or tinidazole (Tindamax), Anti-protozoal medications, such as paromomycin or nitazoxanide (Alinia).
