It is the outgrowth of bone along the sides of preexisting bones. Bone spur usually developed at the joint where two or more bones meet each other.

Signs and symptoms depend upon the location where outgrowth of bone occur:

  • If it occurs at hip join then it makes difficulty in movement from that joint and pain in that joint.
  • Spur at knee joint make difficulty in walking.
  • At spinal cord it compresses the bones and causes numbness and weakness by pressing the nerve root.
Causes

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of bone spurs. It damages the cartilage between the bones at joint and reduce the friction between two bone so during repairment of damage bone spur produce along edges of the existing bone.

Diagnosis

After taking medical history your doctor conducts the physical examination to check the tenderness and any other abnormality and then recommend the test to confirm the diagnosis:

  • X-ray
  • Blood test
  • MRI
  • CT scan

Treatment

For pain your doctor may recommend the pain killer like acetaminophen, iburpofen, and naproxen.
