It is defined as the malformation of blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms include:
- Dizziness
- Diplopia
- Fainting
- Headache
- Confusion
Causes
The exact cause of malformation of blood vessels is not known yet but it may be assumed that there is a genetic predisposition of this condition.
Complications
Only complication of this condition is bleeding due to the hemorrhage of vessels which block the blood flow and cause ischemic injury of brain.
Diagnosis
After taking history your doctor may conduct the physical examination to check the reflex and nervous system integrity and might recommend the followings test to confirm the diagnosis:
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to take the detailed image of your brain.
- Cerebral angiography to check the condition of your blood vessels in the brain.
- Blood test to check the complete blood count
- Lumber puncture to check the CSF pressure.
Treatment
Treatment options include:
- Medication to treat the signs and symptoms like anti-epileptic and pain killers
- Surgery to remove the malformation
