Churg-Strauss Syndrome

It is a disorder that involves inflammation of blood vasculature due to which blood flow towards the organs and tissues become sluggish and ischemic damage occurs. This condition is also called eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis(EGPA).

Symptoms

Asthma is the main sign and symptoms of this disease and it occurs many years before other inflammatory issues appeared. Signs and symptoms include:

• Weight loss
• Hay fever
• Fatigue
• Cough
• Joint pain
• Muscular cramps
• Fever
• Shortness of breath
• Rash
• Blood in urine or stools

Causes

It is a hyperactive immune disorder in which genetic and environmental factors play huge rule. The exact cause of churg-Strauss syndrome is largely unknown.

Hyperreactive immune system starts to attack on healthy cells instead of foreign particles.

Complications

Complications include following:

• Skin scarring
• Peripheral nerve damage
• Heart disease
• Kidney failure

Diagnosis

There is no specific test for this syndrome because symptoms mimic the many other conditions.

There is a rule of 6 to diagnose the churg-strauss syndrome.

• Asthma
• Higher count of white blood cells count
• Damage to one or more nerve
• Sinus
• Migratory lesions
• White blood cells present outside the blood vessels

Treatment

Medications only relieve the symptoms there is no cure for this syndrome.

Medications include the following:

• Biologic medications
• Corticosteroids
• Immunosuppressive drugs
• Immune globulin
