Cholesterol is a lipid/waxy substance in the body obtained from diets. Normal levels are necessary to make healthy cells but increase level lead to fatty deposition in many parts of the body including major vessels. Sometimes this blockage become hard and known as thrombosis and sometimes it detachment leading to the development of embolism.

Cholesterol are mainly attached to the proteins in the body and known as lipoproteins. There are 2types of cholesterol which are:
- Low density lipoprotein. These are bad cholesterol.
- High density lipoprotein. These are good cholesterol
- There are certain environmental or genetic factors that results in the development of high cholesterol in the body.
Complications
Complications of this condition are:
- Chest pain mainly due to angina
- Heart attack
- Stroke
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is mainly done by blood test measuring: Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, Triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood)
Treatment
Treatment options mainly includes medications like statins, Bile-acid-binding resins, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, injectable medications, Fibrates, niacin, Omega-3 fatty acid supplements.
