Keratitis
Keratitis
It is defined as the inflammation of the cornea which is the clear spherical shape structure in front of the pupil and iris. It can be occurred due to infection and non-infection causes which include bacterial keratitis and keratitis due to wearing of contact lenses regularly respectively
Symptoms
The following are the signs and symptoms of keratitis:
- Photophobia
- Blurred vision
- Eye pain
- Redness of eye
- Reduce vision
- Foreign body sensation in eye
Causes
Keratitis occur due to the following causes:
- Viral keratitis
- Bacterial keratitis
- Injury to cornea
- Wearing contact lenses
- Using contaminated water
Complications
Following complications occur due to untreated keratitis:
- Blindness
- Temporary reduction of vision
- Corneal ulcers
- Viral infection of cornea
- Scarring of cornea
Diagnosis
After history diagnosis can be made by:
- Slit-lamp examination to detect the extend of inflammation.
- Eye exam
- Penlight examination
- Laboratory tests of tears and corneal cells
Treatment
Treatment of keratitis depend upon the cause of inflammation:
- Fungal keratitis required anti-fungal eye drops
- Bacterial keratitis required antibiotics
- Viral required anti-viral and steroids drops to reduce the inflammation
