Lymphoma

This is the cancer of lymphatic systems. Lymphatic system consists of lymph nodes/ lymph glands, spleen, thymus glands, bone marrow. Lymphoma affects all the areas of the body as well as other organs.Many types of lymphoma exist. The main subtypes are Hodgkin’s lymphoma (previously called Hodgkin’s disease) and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Causes

Main cause is not yet known but studies shows that in lymphoma white blood cells of the body which are involved in the defense develop some kind of mutation in DNA. As a result of this mutation cells begin to multiply abnormally and rapidly and result in a tumor. This also leads to cause many diseased and ineffective lymphocytes in lymph nodes.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Other tests include the following:

  • Biopsy of lymph nodes
  • Blood tests
  • Testing of bone marrow sample
  • Imaging tests include include CT, MRI and positron emission tomography (PET).
Treatment

Treatment options include:

  • Active surveillance
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Bone marrow transplant
  • Targeted drug therapy
