Meningitis

It is defined as the inflammation of the covering which surround the brain and spinal cord called meningitis. It is occurred due to the bacterial and viral infection or by trauma.

Symptoms

  • Stiff neck
  • High grade fever
  • Seizures
  • Severe headache
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty in walking
  • Poor feeding
  • Malaise
Causes

The most common cause of meningitis is the viral infection which is followed by bacterial infection or sometimes fungal infections. Below mention are the bacteria which cause meningitis:

  • Neisseria meningitis
  • Haemophilus influenza
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Listeria monocytogenes

If left untreated it may cause the following complications:

Diagnosis

After checking medical history and conducting motor examination your doctor will recommend the following tests:

  • Lumbar puncture to check any presence of infections
  • Imaging test to check the extend of infection
  • Blood culture
  • CSF test
Treatment

The treatment options depend upon the type of meningitis which includes:

  • Bacterial meningitis treats with antibiotics and sometimes required corticosteroids.
  • Viral meningitis required bed rest, a lot of fluids and medications to treat the fever and pain
  • Fungal infection required anti-fungal therapy like ketoconazole
