Nasal Polyps
Soft, painless and benign growth on the lining of nasal passage and sinuses are known as nasal polyps. They are characterized by teardrops or grape like structure hanging down from the lining. Nasal polyps can result from chronic inflammation due to asthma, recurring infection, allergies, drug sensitivity and certain immune disorders.
Symptoms
Symptoms include:
- Runny nose
- Constant stiffness
- Postnasal dripping
- Reduced sense of smell
- Reduced sense of taste
- Ache in the upper teeth
- Frequently nasal bleeding
- Headache
- Reduce sense of taste
Causes
Exact cause of this condition is not known. However, studies shows that persistent inflammation and irritation on the mucosal lining of nasal cavity lead to the formation of nasal polyp. Immune system responses and different chemical markers in the mucous membrane play role in the appearance of polyp. Onset age is usually young and middle aged adults.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Other tests include:
- Nasal endoscopy
- Imaging tests like CT scan
- Skin prick test for allergy
- Tests for cystic fibrosis
- Blood tests
Treatment
Treatment options include:
- Medications like nasal corticosteroids, oral and injectable corticosteroids
- Aspirin desensitization
- Surgery like endoscopic sinus surgery is considered when nasal polyp is in severe stage.
