Neurofibroma

Neurofibroma is a type of peripheral nerve tumor characterized by soft lumps under or on the skin. It can develop within minor or major nerves anywhere in the body. It can sometimes arise from several nerve bundles and known as plexiform neurofibroma. Usually it’s a benign tumor but rarely it can be cancerous. Symptoms are usually absent or mild when present. Onset of these tumors are from 20 years to 40 years. It can be associated with people having neurofibromatosis type 1.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Sometimes imaging tests are used to diagnose like CT scan, X-ray or PET scan.

Treatment

Treatment options include:

  • Usually treatment involves monitoring with regular checkups and imaging tests.
  • Surgical resection of the tumor
  • Physical rehabilitation after the surgery.
