POEMS Syndrome

It is a rare type of hematogenous disorder which involved the nerves and other structure of your body.

Symptoms

POEMS stand for polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy/edema, monoclonal-protein and skin changes, signs and symptoms include:

  • Numbness
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Enlarge spleen, liver, and lymph nodes
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Diabetes
  • Sexual problems
  • Fatigue
  • Edema
  • Red spot-on skin
Causes

The exact cause of this syndrome in still unknown but it may be assumed that mutation is the cause of POEMS syndrome which produce the abnormal number of plasma cells and protein.

Diagnosis

After taking medical history your doctor will recommend the blood test bone marrow biopsy to rule out the other causes.

Treatment

The cure of this syndrome is not present yet but available treatment option like chemotherapy, radiation therapy and stem cells transplantation will reduce the signs and symptoms.
