Primary Lateral Sclerosis

It is a disease which involves the motor neurons and break them slowly in the brain. Primary lateral sclerosis affects the motor neurons due to which spinal cord neurons is unable to perform their function as they depend on motor neuron from brain for their activation. In this disease weakness in muscles is the predominant sign and symptoms due to which you lose your control on yours muscles.

Causes

The main cause of this disease is still unknown. There are two types of this disease adult primary lateral sclerosis and juvenile primary lateral sclerosis. Adult type is sporadic but juvenile type has some mutations in certain genes which is involved in the disease process.

Diagnosis

After taking detailed history and conducting physical examination your doctor might recommend the following test to diagnose your condition:

  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to check any lesion in your brain
  • Blood test to check any complete blood cell and serum level of certain hormones and enzymes
  • Nerve conduction test to check the nerve ability to send the impulses
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Electromyogram to check the electrical activity of muscles
Treatment

This is the progressive disease and presently there is no treatment option available for this disease unfortunately. Your doctor might recommend the following things to reduce the signs and symptoms:

  • Speech therapy for the facial muscles
  • Wheelchair and assistive device for walking purpose
  • Medication to reduce muscles spasm
  • Physical therapy for joint mobility and to control the joint pain
