The serious condition in which there is infection spread in the body and body started responses by destroying its own body tissues. In sepsis many organs involved and get damaged by infections it is the life-threatening condition which required urgent treatment.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of sepsis include:
- Abnormal mental status
- Abnormal blood pressure
- Breathing difficulties
- Increase serum lactate level
Causes
There are many causes of sepsis which include:
- Wounds
- Burns
- Bacteremia
- Pneumonia
- Kidney infections
- Urinary infection
- Digestive system infections
Diagnosis
After taking history and conducting physical examination your doctor might recommend the following tests:
- Blood test to check the certain things like clotting factors, protein level, electrolyte imbalance and blood oxygen level
- Urinary analysis
- Wound secretion culture test
- Imaging tests like x-ray, CT (Computerized Tomography) scan and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to rule out the other causes of sepsis.
Treatment
Treatment options for sepsis include:
- Intravenous fluid to recover the dehydration
- Vasopressors to constrict the blood vessels and improve the blood pressure
- Antibiotics to treat the bacterial infection
- Surgical removal of necrotic organ or tissue
