The malignancy of small intestine which is rare type of cancer. Small intestine is a lone tube which connect the stomach with the large intestine, many digestive functions occur in small bowel like absorption of many important nutrients from the food. There are many types of small bowel cancer including adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine tumors, lymphomas, and sarcoma.
Symptoms
Below mention are the signs and symptoms of small bowel cancer:
- Skin flushing
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Weight loose
- Jaundice
- Abdominal pain
- Fatigue
- Melena
- Diarrhea
Causes
The exact cause of the small bowel cancer is not known yet but it may assume that mutation in DNA causes disastrous changes in the cell growth pattern which help in the development of the cancer. Cancerous cell also metastasizes other sites of the body.
Diagnose
After taking history and done physical examination your doctor recommends the following test to diagnosis the cancer:
- Biopsy to check the cancer type and extent of malignancy.
- Blood test to check any serum abnormality
- Urine test
- X-ray for detailed images of abdomen
- MRI
- Endoscopy to see internally what happened inside
Treatment
Treatment option depend upon the severity of malignancy or stage of cancer. The main aim of treatment is to eliminate the cancer and stop its spreading to other organ or tissues. Treatment options includes:
- Surgical removal of whole small intestine or some part of organ which is composed of malignant cells.
- Chemotherapy to kill the malignant cells with the help of drugs
- Radio therapy to kill cancerous cells by radiations
- Immunotherapy
